Hey Reader, Welcome to The Compass, your written companion to The Strategic Thinker podcast. Here, we break down powerful insights and practical actions to help you think long term and build the life of your dreams. This Week's ReflectionSome of the hardest decisions we face are not between right and wrong. They are between what we still love and what we know. This edition sits with that tension, and with the particular kind of honesty it takes to hold both truths at the same time. The Idea Worth Sitting WithWe often imagine that endings happen because the passion disappears. Because the work has become unbearable. Or simply because we no longer care the way we once did. Sometimes that is true. Sometimes the work still matters. The people around it still matter. The sense of purpose has not faded. And yet something tells us, even when we would rather it stayed silent, that the next chapter is waiting. That gap, between desire and reality, is one of the most uncomfortable places to sit. And one of the most honest. What Stan Wawrinka described after his final Wimbledon was not grief. It was clarity. The kind that only arrives when we are honest enough to stop asking "do I still love this?" and start asking "does this still belong to this chapter of my life?" Those are very different questions. And learning to tell them apart may be one of the most important things a strategic thinker can develop. Three Ideas From This EpisodeWanting to continue and knowing it is time to stop are not the same question. They can coexist without contradiction. Some of the most honest and courageous decisions are made not when the love has faded, but when the love is still present and the season is ending anyway. Holding both truths at the same time is genuinely uncomfortable. It is also where clarity lives. Knowing in advance changes how you experience the ending. Stan Wawrinka knew this was his last Wimbledon. That awareness allowed him to be present inside the closing chapter in a way that only becomes possible when you have named it honestly. His last Australian Open was his last Australian Open. Each match carried a different weight because of that knowledge. There is something worth treasuring in that awareness, even when it is bittersweet. The courage to leave on your own terms is its own kind of achievement. Not everyone gets that choice. Some decisions are made for us by circumstance, injury, or forces outside our control. When we have the awareness and the honesty to name our own ending before it arrives, that is a particular kind of self-knowledge worth recognising. The Stan Wawrinka ReflectionAfter losing in four sets at what would become his final Wimbledon, Stan Wawrinka said something that stopped me. "I don't want to retire, but I know it's time to stop." What struck me most was the sincerity behind it. He was not grieving publicly. He sounded like someone who had sat with both truths long enough to arrive somewhere settled. He still loves the game. That much is clear. And he has looked honestly at what the game is now telling him, and chosen to name it without bitterness. That takes a particular kind of self-awareness. And a particular kind of courage. Insight of the Episode"The answer to 'do I want to stop?' and the answer to 'is it time to stop?' may not be the same. And perhaps they don't need to be." Some of life's most difficult decisions ask us to hold two truths at once. The love that is still present. And the season that is ending anyway. Recognising the difference between those two questions, and having the honesty to sit with both, may be one of the most valuable forms of self-awareness available to us. Because sometimes, love isn't the question. Timing is. This Week's Reflection QuestionsIs there something in your life that you still genuinely love, yet deep down sense its season may be coming to an end? Are you waiting for the love to fade before you give yourself permission to name the ending? And what would it look like to let both truths exist together, with gratitude rather than resentment?
